What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and how does it work?


Deciding to see a clinical hypnotherapist to get help with a problem that has been bothering you is a huge step and you will have probably looked at the various websites offering help and decided to put it off for another day.   Once you make the first contact this will be the first step you will take on the positive journey you will make to change the rest of your life.


Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a brain based therapy using the most up to date findings of neuroscience and retraining the brain, it also measures the outcomes of your therapy and enables you to take control of your life and move forward positively and this usually starts working immediately.    It combines the powerful tools of Solution Focused Based Therapy (SFBT) which is a very positive type of psychotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy which work together to enable you to move forward.


Solution focused hypnotherapy aims to help you to overcome stress or emotional problems by reducing anxiety and calming your mind in a state of focused attention and then using positive suggestion to bring about a  change.   It involves looking at a current situation to determine where you want to be and what you would like to change in your life. This will help you to build coping mechanisms and discover new positive solutions to make you happy.


As the name suggests, this hypnotherapy focuses on solutions for the future, rather than analysing problems or discussing painful experiences of the past.  It is focused, not forced.  This can make a therapy session an extremely soothing and positive experience.  Events of the past cannot be erased but our thoughts around them can be altered to enable you to regain control of your life and break free from the self limiting thoughts you may be experiencing through hypnosis.


Therefore we do not need to talk about your problems for hours and hours in order to get to the root of it or spend time picking apart your past.   We are not 'problem centred' but 'solution focused'.  We acknowledge the problem, decide on the goals you wish to achieve then focus on the here and now and the solutions that you can achieve.  We start with little steps that will lead onto bigger changes.


When you are relaxed and in a perfect frame of mind you can see the wood from the trees and change the way that you think, for the better and be more confident and in control of your life. Once in a trance state it is possible to access your subconscious mind to enable changes to take place so that you deal with situations more appropriately effectively and successfully.

  What is hypnosis?



Hypnosis is a relaxing and constructive way of achieving a natural state of trance.


We drift in and out of trance several times naturally each day, we daydream, focus our attention on something and block out any distractions around us, for example, when you listen to music, watch a film, driving your car (how many times have you arrived at your destination and not remembered how you got there), walking or simply just being deep in thought.   It is a bit like the brain being in neutral but focused concentration.


During trance you will aware of your surroundings whilst remaining relaxed and be more open to suggestion whilst remaining in complete control throughout.  It has been known for someone to fall asleep, this is not a problem.  You will be awoken gently and will feel refreshed and relaxed.


I will expertly help you to attain a state of trance to access your subconscious mind as this is where your important brain processes takes place and where positive changes in the way that you think can be made.  Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, there are no rules and your experience will be totally unique.  Most people say how enjoyable it is, having time to yourself, just thinking with no distractions.  It is like a spring clean for your mind.


Hypnosis is completely safe and has been used for hundreds of years and together with the modern developments in neuroscience we understand so much more about the brain and how solution focused hypnotherapy can help you.


Hypnosis is surrounded by misconceptions and is sometimes viewed with suspicion, but is is actually very ordinary.  You cannot get stuck in hypnosis or made to something that you would not wish to do and you will be aware of your surroundings at all times.  You are not in anyone else's power and they cannot take control of you.  Hypnotherapy is totally natural and I would say that it is more of a guided meditation, to achieve the goals that you want.  It is you that will do all the work!


You and you alone are in control of your hypnotic experience.



Initial Consultation


This is a joint process between us.  It is important to understand that change happens because you want it to and you will need to be prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen.

I will discuss with you what you want to achieve, how hypnotherapy can help you and how many sessions you are likely to need.  You will also be given a complementary relaxation CD or downloadable version to take away with you to use between your weekly sessions, which will help with the therapy.


These consultations can be done either face to face or via Teams.



Subsequent sessions


These sessions will last for approximately one hour and can be done either face to face or via Teams.

 


 

The first part of the session will be to discuss your goals and progress in order to be clearly focused on what you wish to achieve during the second part of the session which is when you will relax on the couch, listening to gentle background music and I will speak to you in a gentle voice.  This is a very natural and comfortable experience and this will enable the positive suggestions and metaphors used to improve the way that your brain processes thoughts and this will help to develop positive receptive pathways in the brain to help you achieve your aims.

 


 

When the session comes to an end you should be feeling relaxed and refreshed and moving towards your goal of removing any negative thoughts or worry that you may have been experiencing.

 


 

You will be able to drive and continue with your day after your session.
